Cultural Encounters

After completing the course, students will be familiar with selected theoretical and methodical approaches as well as specific case study information related to cultural encounters, such as movements, transfers, encounters, and exchanges of cultural practices worldwide. They can understand the multi- and interdisciplinary character of interactions and interconnectedness globally, and of transcultural flows, and make use of selected ways to analyse these. They will have the ability to apply the appropriate theoretical and methodical steps to explore selected case study examples. Students will be enabled to reflect on and actively analyse transcultural flows and cultural encounters.

The precise literature is subject to the specific course’s topic and will be recommended for each individual course by the respective teacher.

ICE first or second year students.

Timing

First or second year of the MA program in ICE Studies.

Completion methods

The courses will be offered in the form of an online moodle course, online teaching, or contact teaching. The attendance requirements and methods of completion will be specified for each individual course, by the respective teachers.

Assessment practices and criteria

The assessment criteria are aligned with the learning outcomes of the course by the respective teacher. The University of Helsinki’s grading scale of 0–5 will be applied.
