Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 16:15 to 18:45, starting on January 13th.

The course will be carried out through on-site lectures, and students will have to hand in written essays as a way of keeping up with their learning progress.

Description of the Course

The aim of this course is to give an insight and explore Basque sociolinguistics, as a way of understanding the process of revitalization that the language has been undergoing over the past decades. These are some of the topics we will be covering in this course: the standardization process of the language, getting to know the concept of neo-speakers in the Basque Country, the different speaker profiles and identities that we can encounter in different generations and geographic areas (and how they are all so recent, considering the political and historical circumstances), the so-called Breathing Spaces, language policies over the years, and language officiality and its implications.
