Environment and politics (Global Development Studies)

5 cr

Intermediate studies

The course helps students to analyse issues of the societal environment as fields of material control, social constructs, and political debate with boundary conditions set by biophysical factors. The course especially focuses on social environmental issues in the Global South. The course examines the relationships between the environment, society, and politics as issues related to the use, availability, control, and management of natural resources where material starting points, social conditions, and cultural meanings given to the environment intertwine. The course is structured around a range of topical themes including climate, water issues, nature conservation, land investments, mining, fair trade, environmental vulnerability, forest policy, corporate environmental responsibility, the political economy of natural resources, critical rural research, environmental justice, and environmental movements.
