Advanced studies

Cosmology is the framework by which people seek to cope with new situations and changing circumstances in life. Cosmology is not the same as culture, because cosmology can transcend the circle of shared meanings. With anthropologists focusing on historical diversity and change, previous views of cultural separation have shifted to the study of cosmology and knowledge. This course examines the broad anthropological debates that reflect this transition. Topics include religious conversion, witchcraft and magic, cultural interactions, the state, and communal violence. The course first teaches how to identify and analyse the diverse forms in which people construct, imagine, and organise their world. The second objective is to help the student understand how anthropological thinking has evolved from the study of limited social and cultural worlds towards the examination of complex historical situations and changing realities. The third objective is to explore political and ethical anthropological perspectives that take into account cosmological and epistemic perspectives.
