Compulsory prerequisites

Bachelor degree or equivalent.

Recommended prerequisites

Basic knowledge about sustainability and sustainability science, e.g. SUST-001 Sustainability, and the study of wellbeing and welfare, e.g. intermediate course in social research

The student understands current approaches in studies of welfare, well-being, equality and exclusion and how these connect to sustainability, including those challenging the concepts of development and sustainability as fundamentally Eurocentric and lacking. The student sees how welfare state institutions are connected to global ecosocial development and is able to seek solutions to sustainability challenges.

An article-based reader, available through the course platform.

Online course with either in-person workshop group work or individual essay project or both. The availability of workshops/individual projects is defined in the yearly teaching programme.

Primarily for students in the Master's Programme in Social Research, Master's Programme in Contemporary Societies and Master's Programme in Environmental Change and Global Sustainability.

The course is also available in the selection of continuous learning, and it can be offered in the selection of Open University. The number of students accepted from these networks is defined separately in the annual teaching programme.
