Structures and development

After completing the course, the student understands the basic theory of structural and development history approaches and knows their latest applications in relation to Finland. They are able to interpret the studies through the above and are able to apply the intellectual framework to the interpretation and assimilation of advanced learning materials. The student is well-prepared for comparative analysis of structural change and different long-term development paths on the regional, national, and global levels.

Book exam

During the course, students independently familiarise themselves with the latest domestic research on structural and development history. The themes examined include changes to the social knowledge and theories pertaining to structures and development; cross-border and regional processes; the long-term structures of the life course, livelihood and population; the historical relations between economic and human development; gender, power and institutions; the evolving nature and goals of the elites; the effect of international relations, conflicts and the threat of violence on peripheral development; the significance of global economic and knowledge-based connections to economic growth; and the multi-component genesis of the ‘welfare state’.

Graded on a scale of 0 to 5. All completed components will be taken into account in assessment, while self-assessment is promoted.
