The course introduces students to new Finnish structural and development history research. Topics discussed include the changing societal knowledge and theories of structures and development; transnational and regional processes; the long-term structures of life, livelihoods, and populations; historical relations between economic and human development; gender, power, and institutions; the changing nature and aspirations of elites; the impact of international relations, conflicts, and the threat of violence on peripheral development; the importance of global economic and knowledge connections for economic growth; and the complex development of the “welfare state”.
