Introduction to Educational Psychology

After completing the course, students will have basic knowledge of

• Phenomena and processes related to learning
• Human development as a phenomenon of educational psychology that is shaped biologically, socially and culturally as well as through technological mediation
• The significance of emotions, motivation and wellbeing for learning and pedagogical interaction

Students will be able to

• Promote learning and motivation with the help of knowledge about educational psychology, for example, through constructive feedback and self-assessment
• Reflect on and reshape their behaviour and justify their solutions on the basis of research
• Develop teaching and education as creative experts collaborating with other parties
• Apply technologies in the collaborative creation of knowledge

Completion methods

Class attendance. The course is a blended lecture course, integrating online learning, engaging lectures and group exercises. Students must complete both group and online exercises as well as an online examination. Students are encouraged to attend the lectures that enable them to reflect on the dynamics of large groups and on their own learning.

Assessment practices and criteria

The overall grade for the course will be based on an online examination requiring in-depth understanding and graded on a scale from 0 to 5. Assessment focuses on the application and conceptualisation of the information covered in the course. Students must use this information to respond to the challenges and questions included in the examination. Assessment places value on the personal insight of students.

Activities and methods in support of learning

• The course is based on reverse digital learning paths, designed in accordance with the principles of insightful learning. The learning process begins during the first session and must be followed by everyone.

• Before each subsequent meeting, students watch activating video clips, read textbooks and complete assignments.

• The course methods include not only engaging lectures, but also case-based learning assignments, gamified self-assessment, interactive discussion, peer feedback and digital technologies.

• Students develop their groupwork skills and ability to engage in collaborative knowledge creation as part of independent groupwork.

Target groups

To complete the course, students must hold a valid right to complete pedagogical studies for teachers.

The course is compulsory for students completing pedagogical studies for teachers (60 cr).
