Kinetics and thermodynamics

• Understanding differences between kinetic and thermodynamic aspects in reactions
• Ability to use both differential and integrated rate laws
• Using concepts in reaction mechanisms; rate determining steps
• To estimate spontaneity of reaction using enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy

Chemical equilibrium

• Being able to solve both heterogeneous and homogeneous equilibrium calculations
• Being able to apply equilibrium concept in acid-base-systems and redox chemistry
• Understanding how applied changes in the system affect the equilibrium

Lectures, homework and exam.

Written exam elucidating both knowledge of theory and application of the topics named in Learning Outcomes.

General scale 1-5.

Exercises on-line. Group studying at the "study foyer" is encouraged.

Compulsory for students in the Bachelor's Programme in Chemistry and in the Bachelor's Programme for Teachers of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (Chemistry teacher -study track). The course is available for other degree programmes.

This course is only offered in Finnish and Swedish through Open University. For the English course, you must apply for a non-degree study right.

Offered annually in fall term in period II (in Finnish and Swedish) and in spring term in period IV (in English). The intensive course is offered annually in period I (in Finnish).

The fall semester (period I or II) of the first year of studies.
