Basic studies

Always necessary material:

Knowing: Vector nature of electric and magnetic field, flux and line integral; Gauss law; Potential difference; Energy of electric and magnetic field; Capacitance; Dielectrics and permittivity; Magnetic force and Ampere s law; Faraday s law of induction, Lenz s law and inductance; Oscillating circuits, forced oscillator, phase difference and resonance; Maxwell s equations, electromagnetic wave and intensity.

Applying: Electric field of a symmetric charge distribution using Gauss law, potential difference using electric field; Magnetic field using Ampere s law, (vector) force acting on a current carrying wire or a charge in magnetic field; Induced emf in a current loop; Current and voltage for a capacitor and coil in DC and AC circuits, resonance frequency; Expressions of electric and magnetic field in electromagnetic wave.

Complementary material:

Knowing: Superposition principle for electric and magnetic field; Energy density of electric and magnetic field, Electric field and charge distribution in a conductor, equipotential surfaces; Biot-Savart law and moving charge as a source of magnetic field; Induced electric field; Time constant and power factor; Displacement current; Deriving electromagnetic wave equation; Poynting vector; Radiation pressure.

Applying: Electric field for continuous charge distribution, electric field from potential; Magnetic field using Biot-Savart law; Momentary current in RC- and RL-circuits, power in AC circuit.
