Basics of acoustics and psychoacoustics

The course introduces the basics of acoustics as well as hearing. Through the anatomy of the ear, we move on to psychoacoustics and go through the properties of hearing, e.g. critical bands, masking phenomena, and pitch perception. Musical acoustics are introduced through the sound production mechanisms of musical instruments, and correspondingly, the human speech production system is presented physiologically in order to understand what kind of signal speech is. Finally, we go through the basics of room acoustics and explain how rooms shape the sound we perceive and what is noise.
