Speech-to-text (STT) interpreting is interpreting within one language, i.e., language-internal or intralingual interpreting. The interpreter conveys audible information into visible text for a customer who does not hear or does not hear well enough in the situation. STT interpreting involves different software, ranging from text processing programs to web-based interpreting applications and speech recognition programs.
Anyone who is interested in technology, computer software and different applications. The field is under continuous development, and, following the principles of service design, one can develop it based on one’s own solutions. One of the most important characteristics of a speech-to-text interpreter, is typing fast with laptop-external keyboard. Therefore, it is worth considering and evaluating the typing speed and developing it before the student enrols in the module. Speech-to-text interpreters are qualified to accept interpreting assignments from Finnish Social Insurance Institution (Kela) if their typing speed is at least 9000 keystrokes in 30 minutes (i.e., 300 characters/minute). The language of the interpreting output must be good, i.e., speech-to-text interpreters must have an excellent command of the language they are listening to in the interpreting situation (listening comprehension and literary production.
It is possible to receive assignments from Kela only by completing the 30-ECTS module. For degree students, the 15 ECTS prior to this module consist of courses included in the bachelor’s degree in interpreting:
- TUPE1 Basics of interpreting services 5 ECTS
- TUPE2 Theories and background of interpreting 5 ECTS
- TUKI2 Language and technology 5E CTS
For Open UAS students, these are included in the module Speech-to-text interpreting 30 ECTS.
The remaining 15 ECTS consist of the courses in the advanced interpreting studies TSKT Speech-to-text Interpreting
