Systems Engineering
5 op
This course provides an in-depth understanding of systems engineering and its role in the design, development, and management of engineered systems. It covers fundamental systems concepts, including different types of engineered systems, their components, and interactions. The course introduces systems design models, such as the V-Model, Waterfall Model, Spiral Model, and Concurrent Engineering, offering a structured approach to system design and development.
The course provides an in-depth analysis of the key phases of system design (conceptual, preliminary, detailed), with a focus on problem definition, requirements analysis, system planning and architecture, feasibility analysis, system maintenance and support, technical performance measures, functional analysis, decomposition and allocation, system trade-offs, system specification, and analytical models and modeling. Additional topics include function and form relationships, product, process, and material specifications, system hierarchy, system modeling, integration, system prototype development, design reviews, tracking and controlling technical performance measures, and system optimization.
The course also focuses on the process of system testing, evaluation, and validation to ensure system reliability throughout the system lifecycle.
Additionally, the course covers decision-making techniques in systems engineering, including decision evaluation theory, multi-criteria methods, and decision-making under risk and uncertainty. Ethical considerations, professional norms, and best practices are incorporated to promote responsible system design and development.
