Research in Financial Analysis

This is an advanced-level course in a master’s degree programme and requires knowledge from the following courses prior to starting the course: Corporate Finance, Investments, Econometrics I.

The objective of the course is to provide an overview of recent research issues and trends in empirical corporate finance, financial analysis, and banking.

During this course, students will learn how to read and analyze scientific articles. Course participants will also acquire practical experience in performing empirical analysis and develop their data analytics skills in statistical software packages. After completing the course, students should be able to better understand and appreciate the gradual, cumulative nature of scientific advances, formulate research problems and conduct positivistic empirical research in financial economics and financial accounting. The course provides a general framework for understanding the interactions between firm-level fundamentals, firm policies, firm performance, corporate social responsibility, and financial markets. The course will also enhance students’ generic skills in analytical and critical thinking as well as written expression skills.

By the end of the course students will achieve the following intended learning outcomes:

• Students will demonstrate knowledge of recent reseach issues and latest trends in empirical corporate finance, financial analysis and banking
• Students will apply skills of critical analysis of scientific articles in order to conduct positivistic empirical research in financial economics and financial accounting
• Students will demonstrate written skills through performing a group assignment during the course
• Students will apply data analytic skills by performing analysis in statistical software packages
