Fundamentals of Combustion Engines
5 op
This is an advanced level course for the Master's degree, which requires knowledge either of the course ENER2020 Teknillinen termodynamiikka, 5 op or ENER2040 Selected topics from thermodynamics and heat transfer, 5 ECTS before starting the course.
The course introduces the types and classification of diesel and gas engines. The course examines engine operating variables, such as air coefficient, power, efficiency and specific consumption, and the dependencies between them.
The course introduces simple engine cycle processes, their efficiencies and average pressures, as well as indicator drawings and their use. In addition, the combustion process is discussed, including air requirements, exhaust gas volumes and exhaust gas composition, as well as combustion events in various engines and factors affecting combustion quality. The operation and basic structures of injection and fuel supply systems are part of the core content.
The course also examines the movement of the crank mechanism, the forces acting on it and the balance of mass forces, as well as the generation of torsional vibrations and damping solutions. Supercharging, supercharging systems and supercharger structures, and the related calculations are discussed as part of engine performance. In addition, the course covers the calculation of exhaust emissions, the formation of emissions and methods for reducing them, as well as the structures of the main engine parts and the materials used.
