Uralilainen kielitiede

The course requires theoretical knowledge of the principles of empirical linguistics. BA studies in some linguistic subject will give a sufficient background for the student. Earlier acquaintance with some Uralic language will be useful.

The student will

• have basic knowledge on the geographical distribution of the Uralic language family and relevant methodological approaches applied in Uralic linguistics
• have an understanding of the development of different branches of Uralic languages and their branch-specific features including historical background, language sociological state-of-art and the role of language contacts
• know the typological characteristics of the Uralic languages compared to  world’s languages
• have an overview of the overlapping of inherited features and contact induced changes in the Uralic languages

Information on additional reading and other materials will be given during the course.

It is recommended that the student has knowledge of or studies parallely one Uralic language, depending of her/his earlier studies.

Student activities include: 

• Active participation in lecture sessions 
• Reading and discussing of seminal literature in class 
• Completing assigned course work
• Working through self-study material

Arviointimenetelmät ja -kriteerit

Course achievements are graded according to the standard grading scale 0-5. The basis of grading is provided in the beginning of the course.
