TA5 Topics in Political Economy

The course aims to familiarise students with theoretical findings key to both the study of politics and economics, including Arrow’s impossibility theorem, the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem and findings pertaining to different types of voting systems. Other topics include the relationship between political decision-making and externalities, or public goods. After completing the course, students will be familiar with the basic assumptions of the topics examined and the methods of the field. Additionally, students will understand the limitations of findings and their applicability to the real world. 

The course material includes the lecture slides and material delivered by the lecturer. 

Target group

The Bachelor’s Programme in Economics is responsible for the course. For major subject students of the Bachelor’s Programme in Economics, the course can be included in the Study Module in Economics (ECOK-500). Students of other degree programmes can include the course in the Study Module in Economics (ECOK-300). The course is open to all students .

Timing

The course can be completed at any point of studies, course is not taught every academic year.

The course is organised as a lecture-based course.

Contents

The course examines some of the topics stated in course learning outcomes. Certain topics can be chosen on the basis of students’ interests.

Assessment practices and criteria

The grade for the course is based on a final exam (70%) and student presentations (30%).
The course is assessed on a scale of 0–5.
