Theoretical thinking in sociology

This course shows students some of the diversity and depth of social theory. It shows how social theoretical ideas illuminate central aspects of social existence, in ways that go beyond so-called “common-sense”, and political and journalistic discourses. How social theories provide challenging and critical viewpoints on individuals, groups and societies is emphasised, as is the power of social theories to penetrate deeply into the more hidden and subterranean aspects of social orders. Students are encouraged to use social theories to rethink how they understand the significance of multiple contemporary social phenomena.
