This course opens up the contested nature of urban development: what kinds of public conflicts and discussions predate new urban areas? What is the NIMBY phenomenon, and how to analyze it? What are the politics of urban development? In the course, we take a deep dive into the conflict over the Malmi Airport area, currently scheduled for construction of residential area for 15 000 people. The course uses tools from new French pragmatic sociology, namely justification analysis, to understand the politics and the community building that happen around local land-use.

Completion methods (general description)The course consists of lectures, and a research project, where the students and teacher together analyse the public contestation over the construction of Malmi Airport. These projects, as well as the whole course, are directly linked to on-going research, so it is a great way of seeing sociological research as it happens.
Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment is based on participation at lectures (30%) and a minor research project (70%).

Target groupsThe course is mainly meant for master’s students from sociology, COS and USP. The course is also open to all other students, but places might be limited.
Teaching periodThe course will be organized during the Fall term in period 2.
