High school chemistry courses.

The student

• is able to classify and name organic compounds according to common systematic.
• can propose the geometrical structure of a hydrocarbon compound on the basis of the structural formula.
• can recognize the different types of isomerism, and name the absolute configuration of enantiomers.
• knows the structure of the main product classes, and their typical properties and reactions.
• is eligible to derive the properties like basicity and acidity, or nucleophilicity and electrophilicity on the basis of the molecular stucture.
• knows the common types of organic reactions: substitution, elimination, addition, carbonyl addition and acyl substitution, oxidation and reduction.
• can interprete reaction mechanism schemes, and is able to sketch the schemes for the most common reactions types.

Many basic level organic chemistry books are available and may be used alternatively. Reading of a text book is highly recommended!

Lectures, workshops and homework exercises. No attendance requirements on lectures.

An written exam which measures the students competences with respect to the learning outcomes. The common grading scale 0-5 is employed.

Compulsory for students in the Bachelor's Programme in Chemistry and in the Bachelor's Programme for Teachers of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (Chemistry teacher -study track). The course is available for other degree programmes.

This course is only offered in Finnish and Swedish through Open University. For the English course, you must apply for a non-degree study right.

Offered annually in fall term in period I (in Finnish and Swedish) and in spring term in period 3 (in English).

The fall semester in the first year of studies.
