Basic laboratory work in chemistry

Chemistry lab course in the Basic studies -block

5 cr

Basic studies
The course begins with a Laboratory safety section, during which we discuss occupational and chemical legislation, handling of chemical waste, common hazards encountered during lab work and how to act in laboratory accidents. After passing the safety exam the students begin the actual laboratory work.

In the inorganic part of the course, students do seven lab execises. These are designed to demonstrate chemical concepts already learned in lecture courses. These include for example an inorganic synthesis and the analysis of the product, acid-base titrations and a reaction rate measurement. The results of the inorganic chemistry part will be compiled into a lab report.

In the organic part of the course, students do seven syntheses. These include two acid-catalyzed esterifications and a Friedel-Crafts acylation. The purity of the products will be analyzed with the help of physical methods such as melting point and refractive index. IR spectra are measured and analyzed for all products. The results are reported using synthesis forms.
