Groupwork and organising

The course addresses cooperative skills, group processes and leadership. Groupwork is approached from several mutually supporting perspectives with regard to an organisation’s environment, goals and operations management. The practical themes of the course emerge from the basic educational activities of the course: groupwork and discussions.

The course presents the key questions for group work in a way supportive of the student’s future career in technology, laying the basis for later studies in industrial engineering and management. The course introduces the main practices that support collaboration, as well as theories of groupwork and leadership, and learning how to utilise these to develop one’s own work.

On completing the course, the student will:

· be able to perceive the group dynamics that are central to the student’s own activities and that affect the activities of working groups and group members

· understand how individuals affect group activities and what kind of affirmative and negative effects a group can have on its own members and on the goal-oriented activities of the surrounding organisation

· recognise factors and processes that cause common problems for, or that enable opportunities for, group cooperation, and be able to apply this knowledge for developing one’s own activities

· understand the effect of the standard procedures of the organisation and operating environment on group activities
