Geology and geomechanics

5 cr

Registration period closed
Face-to-face
Intermediate studies

Students will be introduced to the different geological processes underlying the origin, composition and properties of soil and bedrock and to the applied geophysical and geotechnical investigation methods. After the course students can identify the most common rock-forming minerals and classify rock based on their mineralogical composition. They will also know different processes and phenomena affecting the strength and deformation of soils and rocks. He or she will also introduced to formation and flow of soil and groundwater and how they affect stability and stress behavior of soil and rock. Students will learn the most common geotechnical soil and rock-mass classification systems and will be able to describe their input parameters. They will also comprehend the significance of the geological and geomechanical processes and phenomena in civil and environmental engineering.
