The course has two main themes in software engineering: object based design and, in terms of software specification, design by contract. Software specification has the goal of recognizing modularity, reusability, and correctness on different levels of abstraction. The specification methodology is complemented, where applicable, with testing techniques. The topic starts with programming at the level of specifying a single routine (pre and post conditions) and its operation (e.g. handling of exceptions), continuing with class level concepts (e.g. class invariant, abstraction function) and later with the specification, implementation and use of classes schemes and hierarchies in object oriented programming. The "basic pillars" of object mechanism (inheritance, polymorphism, and encapsulation) are further studied during the course.

This online course is part of the Open Programming and Database Courses (5 - 28 ECTS). The training is intended for those receiving temporary protection in Finland as well as for anyone with the ability to study at a higher education level in English.
The course is organized 2.9.2024–31.7.2025. See the study guide(Avautuu uuteen välilehteen) for information about teaching and study methods. The right to study is valid for the duration of the course.

Osaamistavoitteet

After the course, the student will be able to * assess and design definitions of basic software components (functions, classes) * analyze and test exception situations of components and contract terms guiding their use * build and analyze object solutions based on inheritance * assess and develop systems based on dynamic binding and polymorphism * generalize object solutions of special cases to generic solutions * apply the mathematical principles of data type compatibility in inheritance and in subtype and parametric polymorphism * recognize, classify and apply basic characteristics of objects (equivalence, comparability) * use and extend generic collective structures The course strengthens the following working life skills: creativity, multi-professionalism, problem solving skills, information and communication technology skills and communication skills.
