TA5 Investment Management

The prerequisites for this course are statistics at the bachelor level. To attend the course, prior knowledge in economics of finance, or financial economics, will be an advantage.

On successful completion of the course, students should be able to

(1) Analyse the types and theoretical concepts of and processes involved in investment management.
(2) Explain portfolio concepts and the process of asset allocation and portfolio construction.

(3) Understand investment planning, risks and decision-making

(4) Analyse investment theories -- diversification, portfolio theory, capital-asset pricing model and efficient market hypothesis

(5) Assess portfolio management styles.
(6) Analyse the characteristics and relative benefits of the various asset classes.
(7) Understand the returns and risks of securities
(8) Explain diversified issues related with market efficiency and behavioural finance
(9) Analyze common stocks and stock valuation

(10) Learn investment in practice -- methods employed by fund managers

Alternate editions of the textbook may be used. However, there may be small differences between editions. Please check the Moodle prior to class for course announcements, lecture slides, and supplementary reading materials. Please note that reading of the lecture materials does not substitute for attending classroom sessions. The lecture notes (slides and handouts) as well as the readings (might also be given later in some cases) are part of the materials tested in the final exam.

Target group

The course is open to students from all degree programmes. The course can also be included in the continuous learning course offerings.

Timing

The course can be completed at any point of studies, course is not taught every academic year.

Completion methods

Optional participation in lectures. The course can be implemented differently as part of continuous learning.

Assessment practices and criteria

Final assessment of the course will be based on an exercise set (30%) and one final written exam (70%) at the end of the course lectures. The final written examination will be based on the course textbooks and lecture materials. The course is assessed on a scale of 0-5.
