The course examines traditions and culture and their reflection in the contemporary German society. The topics include, among others, regional cultural differences, everyday cultural phenomena, traditions and multiculturalism in Germany as well as a brief overview of the differences and similarities of Austrian and German cultures. Written and oral skills are especially in focus.

What you will learn

After completing the course, students will

Understand the main points of short factual texts related to the topics discussed during the course
Master key vocabulary, ask questions and take a stand on the cultural and social issues examined during the course
Understand the cultural background of German-speaking countries and its reflections in contemporary society
Understand the mentality and identity of people from German-speaking regions.

Learning material

Additional information

Completion methodsThe course includes 24 hours of contact teaching and 29 hours of independent study. Through independent study, students familiarise themselves in advance with the course material. In contact teaching, the focus is on discussion and in-depth knowledge. Active participation in contact teaching (at least 75% attendance).

Assessment practices and criteria

Regular and active participation. Feedback from the teacher and peer feedback on course assignments. The course material is used in the end-of-course examination. Studies completed at the Language Centre are graded on a scale of pass/fail.

Target groups

Students in all degree programmes, students with a JOO flexible study right, international students. The course can also be offered as open university education.
